NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ryan Succop is on PUP to start training camp as a result of knee surgery that followed the 2018 season that did not go as neatly as planned.

Succop had a troublesome knee cleaned up sometime after the season, but it had some swelling after the fact and did not respond the way it was expected to.SuccopTexans

Indications are the issue that prompted the surgery did not affect his kicking during the season -- he hit 26 of 30 field goals -- and that the team expects him to be fine in time for the regular-season opener Sept. 8 in Cleveland. [Unlocked]

It's unclear which leg has been the problem or what the more precise timetable for the 32-year old kicker's return is.

Austin Bernard is on the training camp roster for the second consecutive year as a kicker/punter. He kicked two extra points last preseason.

Succop did not participate in OTA and minicamp practices that were open to the media during the spring.

Clues then were that it was an older guy needing to measure out his usage, which is not incongruent with recovering from a procedure that was then unreported.

Succop did not pass a physical on Monday, just as Jonnu Smith and Jurrell Casey did not, leading them all to be placed on the physically unable to perform list.apple icon 72x72 precomposed

Any of them can be moved off the list and start practicing as soon as they pass a physical and are judged to be healthy.

In other injury news: I somehow missed a spring report that may have come from more than one source but that I now see from Cory Curtis that Jonnu Smith suffered a torn ACL against the Jaguars on Dec. 6, 2018. An eight-month recovery timetable would take him through July.
