YAZOO PODCAST: What I like about the Titans a week into camp and a defense of The Kissing Booth

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A week into Tennessee Titans training camp and a year since the start of this site, I reunited with Madison Blevins to talk some football.

BlevinsPodcast

What's been the most encouraging thing about Matt LaFleur's offense? What's with Marcus Mariota's inconsistency? And what's my defense for liking the Netflix Original movie The Kissing Booth?

There is a lot to flesh out for this team, still. But right now I'm not sure what the big worry is beyond wide receiver talent and depth.

YAZOO PODCAST: Evan Silva on the most predictive Marcus Mariota stat

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Evan Silva, Rotoworld's senior football editor, provides the best weekly fantasy football matchup column there is.

He goes well beyond the basics, pointing to updated snaps counts for ball-carriers and targets and the important developments on the defense they will face. These files are as effective at scouting reports as they are for fantasy advice.

PodcastYazooArt

I visited with Silva for this week's podcast and we fleshed out his Titans' offseason lowdowns column and more.

He's been covering the NFL in this fashion for 10-11 years and said he's never been as optimistic about the Titans as he is now. We cover the likelihood the Titans throw to the backs a lot more, the division of labor between Derrick Henry and Dion Lewis, his comp for Corey Davis, the game speed of Taywan Taylor and Delanie Walker, Malcolm Butler's place in the Titans secondary and the one predictive stats that bodes best for Marcus Mariota.

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- We have very little access to the view from the inside, so any conversation with Blake Beddingfield is enlightening.

He was part of 19 Tennessee Titans drafts, the last six as college scouting director.

PodcastYazooArt

And so for this week's podcast, we covered some super-insider territory, starting with a discussion of last week's guest, Samari Rolle, and the best cornerbacks who've played for the Titans.

Then Beddingfield gave us two excellent lists: The three best workouts he attended of players the Titans drafted and the three guys he misread the most as college prospects who landed in Tennessee.

In between the two of those he shared the comps the team had for the three first-round quarterbacks drafted during his tenure: Vince Young, Jake Locker and Marcus Mariota.

YAZOO PODCAST: Samari Rolle remembers tight-knit Titans vs. 'polarizing personalities' on Ravens

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When you ask me about my favorite guys to cover on the Titans, Samari Rolle is always near the top of the list.

He visited with me from Florida for this week's podcast, where he corrects my pronunciation of

Ocala, a city in his state, and I correct his pronunciation of Kevin Byard's last name.

PodcastYazooArt

We cover the difference between the Titans and Ravens teams he played on, he shares the story of the one time he lost his head, he recalls when he learned that a co-catch meant a reception for a receiver, talks of his love for Marshon Lattimore and runs through his thoughts on Malcolm Butler and Mickey Andrews. And those are just the things I managed to write down.

YAZOO PODCAST: No 'M.D.' on an NFL jersey and what do kids cheat at more than Marco Polo?

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A quarterback is all but certain to win NFL MVP, and I don't love it.

BlevinsPodcast

A lot of media and fans think the NFL should have granted Chiefs' offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay-Tardif's request to add "M.D." to the back of his jersey after he got his medical degree, and I don't like that, either.

The Titans were "off target" to Corey Davis last year. (And I should have mentioned in our bit about if that is QB inaccuracy or forcing the ball to Davis that Davis' route running was a contributing factor as well.)

And can the Titans fanbase/brand reasonably be ranked as worst in the league?

Europe-bound Madison Blevins and I discuss those and other issues of the day in this week's podcast.

She made a reasonable case that there is, in fact, a game that is more cheated at than Marco Polo.

We also contemplated this fantastic robotic pothole fixing machine.

YAZOO PODCAST: John Middlekauff measures Marcus Mariota against Derek Carr and Jimmy Garappolo

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Former NFL scout John Middlekauff's been in Nashville this week, and he watched the Titans' OTA practice on Tuesday after visiting with old friend Jon Robinson.

John was nice enough to visit with me in this week's podcast where we talked about the positive trend of complicated offenses, the ranks of which the Titans are now joining.

PodcastYazooArt

Also on the docket: The fraternity of scouts-turned-journalists, the appeal of Malcolm Butler when he was on the market, the Titans' overall talent level and where Marcus Mariota fits in compared to the QBs he sees most often and most closely -- Derek Carr of the Raiders and Jimmy Garappolo of the 49ers.

YAZOO PODCAST: Mike Vrabel and his high school coach share some of Vrabel's origin story

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- You can learn a lot about a guy by learning about where he came from.

That was the thinking behind this week's podcast: An intimate visit with Mike Vrabel and Gerry Rardin, his coach from Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.

The two talked Madison Blevins and I through Vrabel's 7-2 senior season, how an all-boys school helped shape him, his life as an only-child, Taco Day in Rardin's Spanish class, how students at a public school 20 minutes from home burned his dad's office there down and the lure of Notre Dame and Michigan before Vrabel decided to attend Ohio State.

VrabelPodcast

Despite my attempts to get him to swear, Vrabel wouldn't use the full power of the forum.

YAZOO PODCAST: A vision for the Titans' stadium of the future

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Diplomacy is not my thing.

I said that on The Midday 180 recently and one of you proposed it be a new site slogan and go on a T-shirt. I like it.

BlevinsPodcastIn our new podcast, we talk about the latest example of how I would have been a total failure at the State Department, I break down another cookie-cutter story at ESPN.com and we sort through what the Titans and the city should be thinking regarding a football stadium come 2028.

Madison Blevins also tried (and failed) to make a case for having an interest in the royal wedding.

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- We've got a quiet Titans stretch right now, with rookies arriving in Nashville Thursday and media getting our first look at those guys on the field on Saturday.

BlevinsPodcastMusic City is very much in hockey mode right now, with the Predators hosting the Jets in Game 7 of the second round Thursday night with a spot in the Western Conference Final on the line.

So Madison Blevins and I discuss just how big the city's first Game 7 will be and delve into the limits of fan faith and the tendency for it to bleed into super positivity. As you well know, if you want all positive all the time, I am absolutely your guy.

YAZOO PODCAST: Given the inexact science of the draft, was the Titans' targeted draft a smart play?

YAZOO podcast stripeNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Titans only got a four-man draft class, but it's a four-man draft class they really love -- particularly the top two guys.

Pk Pod 2In the post-draft edition of the Paul Kuharsky Podcast, I hash through if it's a good idea to run such a targeted draft when time has shown, given the NFL's hit rate, it's typically best to have and use as many picks as possible.

In Rashaan Evans and Harold Landry, the Titans certainly got two first-round-caliber guys who fill their two biggest needs at inside linebacker and at pass-rushing outside linebacker.
