NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The last we heard from Jon Robinson about Isaiah Wilson, he was confirming he had not spoken to the 28th overall pick in the 2020 draft since late November or early December and putting the onus on the right tackle for the possibility of him resurfacing with the Titans.

That’s not happening as Tennessee dealt him to the Dolphins Monday along with their 2022 seventh-round pick in exchange for Miami’s 2021 seventh-round pick.

New cars lose a lot of value when you drive them off the lot, but that’s nothing compared to this world record for the devaluation of a first-round commodity in 319 days.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Given a choice, NFL teams will almost always take youth and speed.

That’s why the presumption with the Titans at cornerback -- where they need stability, depth and talent but also likely have to save money – is that the team will stick with Adoree’ Jackson on his fifth-year option and could make a move with the pricey Malcolm Butler.

Doing so will require the franchise to force memories of 2020 out of their head. Butler was arguably the team’s best defensive player, ready to fight every week and doing all he could to set a tone for the defensive backfield typically unable to pick up on it.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – There is increasing buzz that the coming purge of salaries around the NFL will be bigger in scope than we may have originally imagined.

That will make for a very fun and newsy free-agent period that will include the traditional early burst starting the afternoon of March 17.

It’s also certain to create some unconventional elements to this offseason.

Shane Bowen’s point of emphasis for Harold Landry heading into 2020 was reducing his snaps.

“He played a lot of plays for us and he did, probably, too much -- that’s on me,” Bowen said. “But we’ve got to find ways to get some other guys that can take some stuff off of him too, and I’ve got to get those guys developed where we are trusting them, putting them in the game, where we feel like they can make plays for us. I’ve got to do a better job of not putting so much on him in terms of play count.”

That didn’t pan out. At all.

And so Landry, who played 986 snaps per Football Outsiders in 2019, was on the field for 1,050 in 2020.

 NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Eager to build through the draft, like most teams, Jon Robinson’s Titans have still taken their shots in free-agency.

Based on production, they’ve won with Rodger Saffold, Malcolm Butler, Ben Jones and Kenny Vaccaro. They’ve lost with Vic Beasley, Dion Lewis, Adam Humphries and Jadeveon Clowney.

But they’ve not been reluctant to chase guys outside of the typical initial free-agent burst and get in the middle of the competition from some high-profile players.

The Titans were on the verge of a massive salary cap purge, the release of six players including four foundational guys, two of them homegrown stars.

The report from Jim Wyatt at The Tennessean came 16 years ago today in an era when a reporter could secure a scoop and have it stand up for a time – in this instance quite a long time.

Wyatt, a friend with whom I worked at the paper for 10 years, was as good a team beat writer as there was in the country.

The Titans and GM Floyd Reese parting with Samari Rolle, Derrick Mason, Kevin Carter, Fred Miller, Joe Nedney and Robert Holcombe helped the franchise chop away a significant amount of scheduled salary as they faced a $27 million dollar overrun of the $85.5 million cap.
