Scout's take: How the Titans can use Malik Willis to their advantage

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Texans have lost nine straight games but have played competitively the past two weeks versus two playoff-caliber teams, the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys.

Houston is last in the NFL in total offense and 26th and 29th in passing and rushing yards, respectively.

On defense, the Texans are 30th overall with the worst rushing defense giving up 167 yards a game while they are 19th vs the pass.

Podcast: The Titans' without Ryan Tannehill, low-energy offense, Jeffery Simmons' confidence

PodcastArtNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A new podcast episode awaits you on Apple, Spotify, and Google Podcasts.

I recorded shortly after I reported that Ryan Tannehill is very likely done for the 2022 season (and that Dillon Radunz tore an ACL). So I delve deeply into that.

Whichever platform you prefer, please subscribe, rate and review.

Other subjects I dive into:

  • How the Titans can function with Malik Willis at quarterback with a patchwork line.
  • How low-energy the offense feels.
  • A Mike Vrabel dilemma when working with so many new guys.
  • The idea of resting up and just playing to win the finale in Jacksonville.
  • Franco Harris on Derrick Henry.
  • Jeffery Simmons' confidence.

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill very likely done for season; Dillon Radunz tore ACL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Ryan Tannehill's second injury to his right ankle suffered in the team's loss to the Chargers in Los Angeles Sunday will very likely end his season, multiple sources confirmed.

Malik Willis worked as the starter during the open portion of practice Wednesday and was the quarterback made available to the media in Tannehill's usual time slot.

Offensive coordinator Todd Downing spoke of Willis as if he would be the starter Saturday at Nissan Stadium against the Texans as the Titans look to end a four-game losing skid that's dropped them to 7-7.

But Tannehill's future beyond that was unclear.

Now PaulKuharsky.com has learned his injury could require surgury.

Mike Herndon: Detailing Titans' walking wounded, lack of answers

By MIKE HERNDON, columnist

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Another week, another lackluster offensive performance, and another handful of injuries for the rapidly deteriorating Tennessee Titans. Those are the two constants across 14 games of the 2022 season and neither seems likely to get a lot better anytime soon.

We can start with the injuries. Mike Vrabel’s squad finished Sunday’s 17-14 loss to the Chargers without the following players:

The minimum the Titans need to do with regard to injuries moving forward

A year after using a record 93 players in 2021, the Titans have used 80 through 14 games.

Mike Vrabel doesn’t publicly lament the issues with depth and the extensive injuries that cause him to need it so much.

PK TV: The Titans after a fourth consecutive loss

pk121922NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Titans are in free fall, their coach and players stammering as their try to explain what's going on.

Mike Vrabel's saying the same thing over and over about the offense's issues -- that it moves the ball when it doesn't commit penalties or allow sacks -- but the group doesn't seem capable of not committing penalties or allowing sacks.

His grumpy manner at the microphone can be fine when it's a side-serving that comes with wins. When it comes accompanying a fourth loss, he comes across like a sore loser.

At 7-7 the Titans still control the AFC South, but many of you seem to have reached a point where you just want it over and are willing to concede to the Jaguars, who are a game behind and host the season finale between the two.

We gathered to discuss it all at the half of Monday Night Football. Head to the private Facebook page or below to rewatch.

Scout's take: A closer look at what went wrong for the Titans in L.A.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When Derrick Henry is your leading rusher that is a good thing. When he is also your leading receiver during a game, questions must be raised.

Henry finished the game with 21 carries for 104 yards and four receptions for 59 yards.

I believe Henry should be on the field in all passing situations because he creates a threat and playmaking option that Hassan Haskins just can’t provide.

Offensive coordinator Todd Downing has very few options on offense.

Avoiding Derrick Henry: Titans' third-and-short calls symbolize fizzling physicality

Avoiding Derrick Henry: Titans' third-and-short calls symbolize fizzling physicality

INGLEWOOD, Calif. -- Mike Vrabel got to some of his repetitive themes after his team’s fourth consecutive loss. Stuff that people will settle for when he’s producing wins that but is played and tired and makes it seem like he can’t find the franchise’s pulse when he’s not getting wins out of his people – which is happening with regularity for the first time now.

It’s not one guy, he said again after a 17-14 loss to the Chargers on a last-second field goal. He wanted to make reporters who weren’t even really singling anyone out the bad guys, because someone might have asked a tough question about people on the offensive line who he insists on coddling, because Dennis Daley has somehow earned the max protection Daley can’t help provide Ryan Tannehill.

Yeah, we’re aware it’s a cumulative operation. The collective physicality that used to be a hallmark of the franchise has fizzled.
