Ten more thoughts about Jon Robinson's firing as the Titans move on

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ten more thoughts on the firing of Jon Robinson by Amy Adams Strunk on Tuesday...

Mike Vrabel’s power: It’s very much a consensus league now. Pete Carroll has a large hand in personnel in Seattle and Andy Reid does too, but John Schneider and Brett Veach, respectively, are hardly regarded as puppets.

Beyond Bill Belichick, who has final say on all football matters with the Patriots, it’s tough to find a coach with true GM powers in today’s league.

Jon Robinson

Vrabel has clearly done a far better job as the Titans coach than Robinson did as its GM. But don’t presume the dynamic for personnel decisions gets flipped entirely on its head.

To fire Jon Robinson in-season, Amy Adams Strunk had to be really angry

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In firing Jon Robinson before he completed the first year of an extension announced in February, Amy Adams Strunk made a giant statement.

Robinson’s recent player acquisition work was poor and watching the results of one of his biggest moves come to fruition on Sunday in Philadelphia was the concluding act.

A.J. Brown, traded to Philadelphia for draft picks as a result of a contract dispute, caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles trounced Tennessee 35-10 and dropped them to 7-5 while the receivers Robinson assembled managed four catches for 41 yards and a score.

PK TV: Public broadcast on #Titans and Jon Robinson firing

Jon RobinsonNASHVILLE, Tenn. -- It's as big an of-field move as there can be at this stage of the season: Amy Adams Strunk fired Jon Robinson and the Titans will be in the market for a new GM after the season.

We've talked over and over about how Mike Vrabel's done a great job as the coach and he's been under-served by Robinson's personnel moves.

Strunk saw the same thing, but it's still a big surprise that with so little left to do from a personnel angle for the remainder of the season she didn't wait until it was over.

Scout's take: Titans had scared CBs, low-impact Jeffery Simmons, poor OL play in Philly

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This was a game of the haves versus the have-nots.

The Eagles have the Titans' best receiver from a year ago in A.J. Brown. The Titans have a rookie in Treylon Burks who has shown flashes but spent more time injured than actually playing and producing.

The Eagles have an offensive line that is all homegrown with their own draft choices and is one of the best units in the NFL. The Titans have spent draft choices and free agent money on the offensive line and are still struggling to find five viable starters.

Titans crumble in Philly thanks to A.J. Brown, Dennis Daley and much more

Titans crumble in Philly thanks to A.J. Brown, Dennis Daley and much more

PHILADELPHIA – Several Titans wanted to pretend like A.J. Brown was just another receiver lighting them up, same as Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, Dyami Brown and Tee Higgins.

He’s not.

Had Jon Robinson found a way to massage things and pay Brown the way his counterparts in San Francisco, Seattle and Washington did with their top-flight receivers Deebo Samuel, D.K. Metcalf and Terry McLaurin – players Brown is better than – perhaps the Titans would have done the blowing out at Lincoln Financial Field.

Instead, it was 35-10 Eagles as they moved to 11-1 and sent the Titans home 7-5, still in good playoff berth shape, but not in good win-a-game there shape.

PK TV: A full venting for you after Eagles 35, Titans 10

Screen Shot 2022 12 04 at 7.49.34 PMPHILADELPHIA -- It's hard to feel very good about the Titans after the last two weeks and with a lot of good reason.

And Sunday's 35-10 trouncing at the hands of the Eagles here at the Linc brought back the bad feelings of April's too-easy give-up in the A.J. Brown trade. He had a big day against his old team with eight catches for 119 yards and two touchdowns.

The offensive line was also a big problem, and a defense that came in determined to make Jalen Hurts beat them from the pocket got exactly what it asked for.

Come rewatch our weekly post-game discussion to talk through all that unfolded in Philly. People are calling it the best post-game chat of the year.

Scout's take: The dangers of the Eagles for the Titans

By BLAKE BEDDINGFIELD, special correspondent

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Eagles are a well-rounded team with the best record in the NFL who will give the Titans all they can handle in Philadelphia Sunday.

A.J. Brown

They have playmakers on offense, at pass rusher and at defensive backs that take the ball away on defense.

They have a dual-threat quarterback in Jalen Hurts who has developed as a passer this season with the help of the front office, which acquiring top talent.

Derrick Henry as a defensive end? Recruitment memories still motivate the Titans RB

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As Derick Henry ran wild at Yulee High School in Northeast Florida, taking 1,397 handoffs for 12,124 yards and 153 touchdowns, a good share of college recruiters looked at him and didn’t see a running back.Derrick Henry Yulee HallwayA hallway at Yulee High School in Florida/ © Corey Perrine/Florida Times-Union / USA TODAY NETWORK

“There were more college coaches who wanted him as a defensive player than as an offensive player,” said Bobby Ramsey, who coached Henry at Yulee. “Of 10, six would say they were recruiting him as a defensive end, four as a running back. Seven maybe. As his career went on, more people would say he’s not a running back.”

More than 10 years removed from his commitment to Alabama, Henry still raises the issue as a source of motivation.
