Implications of Dennard Wilson In, Terrell Williams Out For Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. With Dennard Wilson coming to Nashville to be Brian Callahan's defensive coordinator, per multiple reports, the future of Shane Bowen becomes murky.

Callahan held on to Bowen as a potential DC as he saw how his search unfolded.

He landed a young coach who's got great experience working with top-flight defensive backs with the Rams, Jets, Eagles and Ravens. He's connected to Ran Carthon from time together with the Rams.

In Baltimore, players loved him and found him relatable while fellow coaches respected him.

Bowen had interviewed in Jacksonville and with the Giants, and while New York has not hired yet there doesn't seem to be momentum there.

I suppose Callahan could give Bowen an enhanced title and return him to coaching outside linebacker, the spot from which Mike Vrabel elevated him to coordinator. Ryan Crow replaced Bown as inside linebackers coach but is one of several coaches from Vrabel's staff that I have reported is out.

Wilson could help open a free-agent connection with inside linebacker Patrick Queen, who's the sort of player the Titans have been glaringly missing. He's got other notable player connections.

Also, the Titans have an opening at defensive line coach, with Terrell Williams heading to the Lions as reported by Diana Russini.

Williams was on the Dolphins staff in 2015 with Dan Campell, who took over as interim head coach early, and Ben Johnson, who coached the tight ends.

Williams did good work as a member of Vrabel's staff for all six years. This season he used multiple guys with little experience who joined the team and had to play in short order and got reasonable production.

But he regularly talked as if double teams simply eliminated Jeffery Simmons from plays, so I hope his successor has bigger expectations for what a player who should be regularly dominant can do to affect games even as he draws a lot of attention, as he frequently will.
