Tennessee Titans: What you need to know about the schedule

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- We now know the layout of the football fall.

Here is the Tennessee Titans' schedule and a bunch of notes on what it all means.

Tennessee Titans' 2022 schedule

First time: The home opener against the Giants will be Brian Daboll’s first regular-season game as an NFL head coach. That’s a good time to catch New York. (The Titans will also see their former first-round cornerback, Adoree’ Jackson, in that game.) The Titans will play against two other first-time head coaches and get them at home: Josh McDaniels brings the Raiders to Nashville in Week 3 and Nathaniel Hackett and the Broncos will visit in Week 10. The Titans also play a total of four games against new head coaches with previous experience: Houston’s Lovie Smith and Jacksonville’s Doug Pederson. [Unlocked]

Primetime: No home Sunday Night Football appearance again, which means it’s been since Dec. 30, 2018, which was a flexed game against the Colts with a division title and playoff berth on the line. Before that it was a 2009 game against the Colts. But they have a Week 2 Monday night game in Buffalo, a Week 9 Sunday night game in Kansas City, a Week 11 Thursday night game in Green Bay and a Week 17 Thursday night home game against Dallas.

Long rest: The Titans will play their second game against the Colts (at home), their game against the Bengals ands their season finale at the Jaguars on long rest. Mike Vrabel’s Titans are 8-0 when playing after a bye of a mini-bye after a Thursday night game.Tennessee Tickets

Late Sundays: In addition to the four primetime games, the Titans have three late Sunday afternoon kickoffs: Week 1 vs. the Giants, Week 8 vs. Houston and Week 15 at the Chargers. Only eight games are Noon CT Sunday starts.

Flex: Flex scheduling is in play for Sunday Night Football for Weeks 11-15 and Week 17. In Week 18 the Titans-at-Jaguars game will be slated for Saturday, Dec. 31 at 3:30 pm or 7:15 pm CT or Sunday, Jan. 1 at 12:00, 3:25 or as the one game at 7:20 pm CT.

Weather: The coldest games are at Kansas City in Week 9, at Green Bay at night in Week 11 and at Philadelphia Week 13. Yes. they are built for it with a run-centric offense featuring Derrick Henry. But teams that play in the cold all the time are generally pretty good at it too and those are good teams. Heat shouldn’t be an issue anywhere but at home.

Happy Holidays: The Titans will be home Thanksgiving weekend against the Bengals on Nov. 27, home on Christmas Eve (noon CT against Houston) and home for New Year’s as they play the Cowboys at home on Thursday, Dec. 29.

Reunion: That Dec. 4 game at Lincoln Financial Field against the Eagles will draw a lot of attention as the Titans will be looking to slow A.J. Brown, who they traded to Philly on draft day for first- and third-round picks as they didn’t want to meet his contract demands or endure what would happen when they didn’t.

Too soon: The league failed again to sufficiently split up one of the Titans season series with a division opponent. The Titans and Colts, the two teams expected to slug it out for the division title not only play twice in four weeks, but they will see each other for the last time on Oct. 23 in Week 7. Last year they were finished in Week 8. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for division rivals expected to fight for a title, and maybe a playoff spot, not to see each other in the second half of the season.

Kuharsky megaphoneBeen a while: The Cowboys haven’t played in Nashville since 2014, when the building was still known as LP Field, and the Broncos have not been to Nissan Stadium since 2016.

Underestimated: I got a few tweets about how nice it was for the Titans to get a fourth preseason game or a bye before their Week 2 trip to Buffalo. How fast you forget how capable Mike Vrabel’s team has been of losing to inferior teams. Do you think these Giants will be a great deal worse than last year's Jets or Texans? I think they’ll be on par, and the Titans lost to those teams.

Stretches: The Titans play consecutive road games in Weeks 4 and 5 at Indianapolis and Washington and in Weeks 8 and 9 in Houston and Kansas City. No bad travel there. Their trip to Sofi Stadium comes late in the season. Last year they traveled to face the Rams in early November. This year they head out to play the Chargers in Week 15. It's their only trip that crosses more than one time zone.
