NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Chance Campbell is out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee suffered in the Titans' preseason finale in New Orleans, Brian Callahan said.
"He was playing about as good a football as you can ask," Callahan said. "Heartbroken for him."
Campbell had a terrific training camp and preseason and was in line to be the third inside linebacker. He might have pressured Jack Gibbens for the second starting spot beside Kenneth Murray, though that starter is quick to leave the field in nickel and dime packages.
His disappearance opens the door for more time for rookie James Williams, who's converting from safety, and second-year man Otis Reese, whose roster spot now seems solidified.
If he was out of it, it may also bring Luke Gifford back into the picture. Gifford has been out with a concussion and an afterthought in most roster predictions. The special teamer played in some goal-line packages last season. But cutting him could save the Titans $1.89 million. [Unlocked]
Campbell was a sixth-round pick out of Ole Miss in 2022. He missed his entire rookie year with a knee injury and played only four games in 2023 because of an injury to the same knee.
It was not immediately clear if the new injury is the same knee that was the issue in the past.
