NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mike McCoy, who served as the Titans interim coach for the final 11 games of the season, is interviewing for the full-time job this afternoon.
The Titans went 2-9 under his watch, showing late season improvement in offensive line play, rushing offense and the play of rookie quarterback Cam Ward.
Combined with his four years as coach of the Chargers from he's 29-46 and 1-1 in the playoffs.
But the interview likely marks a thank you for his work as Brian Callahan’s replacement as much as anything.
The Titans franchise does have a history of hiring interim coaches. Of its 21 coaches, four have been interims who dropped the title. In 1974, Sid Gillman kept the job after he took over during the 1973 season. The same happened for Jerry Glanville in 1986, Jeff Fisher in 1995 and Mike Mularkey in 2015.
The Titans are not firing their staff, leaving people in place for the new head coach to sort out. Assistants and McCoy are welcome to pursue other opportunities.
Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson wanted an interview but is not getting one. Special teams coordinator John Fassel is still pursuing the opportunity.
The Titans will host two-time NFL coach of the year Kevin Stefanski for an interview on Saturday and Raheem Morris on Sunday.
They’ve also officially requested permission to speak with Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy, Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph.
Others expected to be interviewed include Klint Kubiak (SEA OC), Jeff Hafley (GB DC), Chris Shula (LAR DC), Robert Saleh (SF DC) and Anthony Campanile (JAX DC).
