NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Corey Davis didn’t play a snap in a preseason game.

But barring a setback this week the fifth-pick in the draft will play Sunday against the Oakland Raiders at Nissan Stadium will be on the field.

“There won’t be a number count,” coach Mike Mularkey said. “We’ll have him in on specific situations and see where it goes from there. I’m not going to show our hand.”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The most controversial roster decision the Titans made, at least according to my Twitter timeline, was keeping veteran receiver Harry Douglas.

A lot of your really love Tre McBride, who was cut and claimed by the Bears.

After a day on the 53-man roster, Douglas was placed on IR with the knee injury that hampered him during camp. He is eligible to be recalled later in the season.

Return man and special teamer Eric Weems, who can play receiver if needed, was re-signed.

So the Titans go into the Raiders game with Rishard Matthews, Eric Decker, Taywan Taylor and a limited Corey Davis as their receivers, with Weems available to help out.

That’s fine so long as they stay healthy. I think Decker will be totally ready to play after the team was super cautious with him following a camp ankle injury. Davis will have to work up to a full load, so he will start out as a spot player after missing a ton of time with a hamstring injury suffered early in camp.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An oddly shaped roster with 11 linebackers means the weekly cut down from 53 to 46 players active on game day gets more complicated.

Matchups and health will factor into these decisions, and Mike Mularkey said he has a number of active linebackers in mind.

The roster may be altered a bit today with a waiver claim or two.

But given the current 53, let’s take a crack at whittling eight guys for a week from today against the Raiders.

Quarterback: It’s Marcus Mariota and Matt Cassel. Alex Tanney goes to IR with what we think is a left ankle injury.

Running back: DeMarco Murray and Derrick Henry are backed up by David Fluellen, who, when active, will play a lot of special teams and could even return kickoffs. Jalston Fowler remains the fullback. I think they would love a third back who’s more explosive and more different from Murray and Henry stylistically. But Khalfani Muhammad didn’t pan out. Might there be someone like him on waivers?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Thursday night as the preseason concluded, we heard the math.

Some teams are already under 90 players, but roughly 1,184 players will lose jobs as teams cut down to 53 by Saturday afternoon.

And hey, for some of those guys it will be crushing. They won’t have seen it coming. They could land on another 53. Some will get signed to a practice squad.

For many more, it’s the end of a fun chance to see how they stacked up with the big boys before moving on with life. Many of those guys would have had to be incredibly naïve to believe they were going to have a job past Saturday.

Call me insensitive, but spare me the poetic stuff about snatched away dreams and how I’d feel differently if it was my job.
