Cam Ward

By PAUL KUHARSKY

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Cam Ward is the No. 1 pick from the 2025 NFL draft and the player the Tennessee Titans hope they can build around in an effort to return to competitive playoff football and make a run for the franchise's first Super Bowl title.

He's a creative, off-script quarterback who made some brilliant plays in his rookie season and has a quick release and an ability to find open teammates, but he joined an organization missing a lot of people and needs to add a layer of structure to his game that wasn't necessary at three different college stops.

Expectations are high in Nashville for the Tennessee Titans quarterback in the 2026 season.

To help him make a jump, new Titans coach Robert Saleh hired Brian Daboll, former New York Giants head coach, who has had QB developing experience with players like Daniel Jones, Josh Allen and Jalen Hurts.

He didn't get much national attention as the top pick in the draft or during his rookie year, but he played his best ball late in the season when he made definite progress.

Ward hurt his throwing shoulder in the 2025 season finale, but was able to work on his lower half while he rehabilitated. As he prepares for his first season with Daboll in an offense that will feature increased option routes and, the team hopes, better protection and weaponry, coaches are looking for him to play more consistently.

Saleh said he doesn't want Ward to play as if he's got to be Superman and understand that Clark Kent can win games, but Daboll doesn't want to squash the heroic elements of the former Incarnate Word, Washington State and Miami signal caller.

That's a balance they hope Ward can find as he now throws to a group of targets that includes No. 4 pick Carnell Tate and free agent Wan'Dale Robinson.

Ward came out of Columbia High School in Texas as a zero-star recruit and had to make his own path. The Titans thought he was the clear-cut choice, declining a trade with the Giants that would have yielded them a draft pick haul in 2025 and 2026.

Now he's beloved by teammates, with whom he often jokes around. But he is also a very serious player who gave candid assessments of his team's struggles during a three-win season. He's studious with the playbook and very intentional with how he carries himself - when he arrived in Nashville, he very quickly learned the names of everyone in team headquarters, from coaches and personnel people to cooks and cleaning staff.

This page is intended to be a Cam Ward hub, home to information about his pre-draft preparations, the Titans drafting him, his rookie season, his preparations for 2026 and what unfolds.

It will be a regularly updated center where you can check for the latest on the Tennessee Titans quarterback.

Why Robert Saleh Believes Cam Ward's Leap With Titans Won't Be About Brian Daboll's Scheme - Feb. 24, 2026
The Titans coach said everyone can teach and learn scheme. For Cam Ward and players the question is different. "Whether or not the player has the capacity to learn the scheme and play to the speed that he needs to play is a different story."

Why the Titans' Offense Won't Mirror the NFL's Shanahan Trend - Jan. 29, 2026
Brian Daboll will coordinate an Erhardt-Perkins system, built largely on shared concepts and option routes rather than fixed route trees. It requires communication, recognition and quarterback command with regular adjustments. Defense will have to get ready for something different from Cam Ward.

Brian Daboll's previous experience, particularly with Josh Allen, is cause for optimism about Cam Ward.

Why the Titans Drafted Cam Ward

Indications are that Cam Ward's quick release, play-making abilities, work ethic, and personality had the Titans sold on him as the No. 1 pick in the draft coming out of the scouting combine in late February of 2025.

But they still held a private workout with him, and he had a memorable moment with Titans executives Mike Borgonzi and Chad Brinker when a rollout took the quarterback toward them and he told them, "I'm solidifying it today."

The Titans drafted Will Levis at the start of the second round in 2023. He wound up with nine starts that season and 12 the next when he was the unquestioned starter from the beginning. Things didn't go well, and with second-year coach Brian Callahan in place, the Titans wanted a coach who'd worked with premier QBs like Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Joe Burrow to help develop a new guy.

The choice of Ward over Shedeur Sanders, who lasted until the fifth round, didn't wind up being complicated.

The Giants offered a significant package of picks, and the Titans certainly could have benefited from the additional draft capital while selecting pass rusher Abdul Carter third overall. But they would have merely been postponing the quarterback question, and the 2026 draft didn't turn out to be nearly as rich in options as many predicted.

They believed veteran stopgaps might have returned them to respectability, but not to championship contention. If Ward reaches his ceiling, they believe he can.

Cam Ward's Development

Ward entered Nashville with questions about his mechanics and decision-making. What followed was a year that started slowly and included a lot of coaching to settle for small gains. Ultimately, there was visible growth under a new coaching staff trying to both build an offense around his strengths and keep him safe given protection issues and a lack of playmakers around him.

He brought the team a 5 a.m. energy, talked in detail about timing being everythingstayed cool in the midst of a fight during joint practice in Tampa with the Buccaneers, and withstood training camp blitzes.

Ward was candid about the team's struggles. His evaluation that "we ass" after an 0-4 start struck some brass, coaches and teammates as overly forthright, but scored points with media and fans for not making any attempt to sugarcoat the obvious. It seemed to blow over.

He played his best near the end of the season and the film of his rookie season showed more reason to be hopeful than not, per analyst Drew Beatty.

Learning Brian Daboll's Offense

Callahan quickly handed over playcalling to Bo Callahan, and Mike McCoy took over the head coaching job after six games.

Now the Ward and Daboll pairing will require adjustment on both sides. But part of the reason that Daboll was hired was because of how much he and the Giants coveted Ward in the 2025 draft, when they were the team trying to trade to No. 1 to draft him.

Daboll is determined to craft an offense that suits Ward and it won't look like the prevalent Shanahan system a majority of NFL teams are running.

Working With Carnell Tate

After the Titans selected Carnell Tate fourth overall, the Ward-Tate connection became the most-watched development of the off-season.

Since 2020, several teams have tried to pair a highly drafted quarterback one year with a highly-drafted receiver the next. The Titans hope they are getting a Joe Burrow-Ja'Marr Chase kind of combo.

How the New Receiver Room Fits Around Cam Ward

"Tate is ...a masterfully deceptive and savvy route runner – both as a deep threat and intermediate separator. The Titans' offense in 2025 had a crippling lack of a true X receiver that could consistently beat press coverage and threaten defenses vertically. Not only does Tate immediately fill that hole in the offensive corps, he also happens to be an elite ball-winner at the catch point."

Cam Ward, Carnell Tate Flash Early Connection at Titans OTA

“He’s a guy who can create versus off, versus press, he really doesn’t drop nothing," Ward said of Tate. "So I’ve just got to continue to find ways to get him the ball early, get him the ball, continue to work on timing.”

The Titans didn't simply need another receiver. They needed a true X receiver capable of winning against press coverage and drawing defensive attention outside the numbers. Tate's ability to separate and win contested catches should give Ward a margin for error that wasn't consistently available during his rookie season. He'll fight to win tight-window throws and he'll rarely drop passes. The question is whether his play speed consistently translates against NFL corners. If it does, Ward should benefit immediately.

Film Study and Evaluation

At PaulKuharsky.com, Drew Beatty did multiple pieces on Ward where he looked at film.

He looked at Ward's pocket drift and deep ball mechanics, his connection with Chim Dike and Xavier Restrepo, and a solid game versus the excellent Seahawks defense.

Hardegree talked through a third-down decision Ward made that he loved, and we examined a successful fourth quarter in an Arizona win.

Cam Ward and the Titans Rebuild

Ward didn't just inherit a quarterback job. He inherited a franchise in the middle of a full reset.

The franchise's divided history meant Warren Moon saw an opportunity to share his retired uniform with Ward.

The Titans schedule his rookie year helped make things exceptionally difficult.

Tennessee lost its last seven games of the 2022 season, four with Ryan Tannehill at the helm, one with Malik Willis and two with Joshua Dobbs.

They traded up to draft Levis with the first pick of the second round in 2023, and he started off backing up Tannehill, but with weak protection, getting hurt seemed inevitable  and when Tannehill suffered an ankle injury Levis took over. He had a big start with four touchdowns against Atlanta and a dramatic comeback in Miami on Monday night, but otherwise, a lot of flat performances.

His habit of trying to do too much really took off in Callahan's first season, and it became clear the team needed a new direction. The 2025 draft class wasn't QB-heavy, but Ward pretty much wound up the consensus top guy.

Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi said during the draft process, "if you find the quarterback that you want, and you think he's a franchise quarterback, then you're not going to pass on him." As the draft process moved along and the Titans had repeated touch points with Ward, it became increasingly clear he qualified.

They passed on the big trade offer from the Giants, stuck with Callahan, who had a very poor first season, and moved ahead with Ward.

Now, though they hired a defensive-minded head coach with Robert Saleh, they are counting on coordinator Brian Daboll and his QB-developing experience to unlock the best of Ward and put him on a solid growth track. They gave him upgrades at receiver, and while the offensive line talent isn't necessarily better, Carmen Bricillo is a highly respected position coach there.

He isn't just part of the rebuild, but he was a major part of the rebrand.

Key Questions

Is Cam Ward expected to start?
Cam Ward is the unquestioned starter for the Titans heading into his second season. Mitch Trubisky is slated to be his backup.

How does Ward fit Brian Daboll's offense?
Daboll didn't bring an offense for Ward to fit into; he's tailoring his offense to fit Ward. But the Titans offensive coordinator will have a good share of option routes that allow Ward to see and process things quickly and leave room for his improvisation.

Who are Ward's top targets?
This year's first-round draft pick, Carnell Tate, selected fourth overall, should be an immediate upgrade. The Titans also signed Wan'Dale Robinson who played in the slot for Daboll with the Giants.

What are realistic expectations for Year Two?
Ward needs to come out of Year Two, leaving no question that he is the Titans' long-term solution at quarterback. What the benchmark stats or win total is remains to be seen, but it's a feeling the team and fans should recognize.

What did Ward's rookie season reveal?
That they've got a promising, professional quarterback with a great work ethic, a quick release and an ability to make some spectacular plays. Ward also showed he can withstand adversity.

How is Cam Ward's shoulder?
Ward and Robert Saleh say he's fine, and in practices he's shown no lingering effects from the AC sprain he suffered in the season finale. He's working to strengthen it to prevent it from happening again.

Is Cam Ward going to be on Netflix?
Yes, he's part of the 2026's season three of "Quarterback," Which debuts Tuesday, July 14.
