NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jon Robinson has an obligation to look after the Titans for both short-term and long-term simultaneously.

That’s no easy job.

Heading into the draft with no second-round pick because of the Julio Jones trade, it’s harder to do.

But if he’s thinking clearly and honestly about the most important position, he’s got to at least be considering the idea that Ryan Tannehill is not going to be able to deliver his team a championship.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans' big needs heading into the draft are clear: receiver, an offensive lineman for either left guard or right tackle, tight end.

Those are the positions where a first-round pick would have room to help this team this season, which should be the goal.

They could take a quarterback looking to 2023.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Titans are in a position to potentially draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2022 draft. If the right player is there and has the value of a potential franchise QB this would be a good year to make this move.

The team needs a future replacement for Ryan Tannehill, who struggled in the playoffs two years in a row and who will be 34 years old before the 2022 season.

A franchise quarterback is a player who makes other offensive players around him better and can carry a team to wins and offensive success without all-star caliber players at critical positions.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans have a need on the offensive line again, and that wouldn’t be so bad if it was as simple as spending a draft pick on a replacement for Rodger Saffold in a move to get cheaper, younger and healthier.

The team cut Saffold on March 10 and saved $10.4 million dollars. Still a high-level run-blocker, his shoulder issues were a growing problem. He quickly signed with Buffalo. 

Of course, the issue with filling the Saffold hole is Dillon Radunz.

At least publicly, Tennessee still doesn’t know what Radunz is.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans, once again, need a receiver in the draft.

And, once again, it’d be great if he was a receiver with great speed who could take the top off a defense.

But we are certainly at a point where Jon Robinson’s draft history, and his draft history with Mike Vrabel as the team’s coach, give us clues about what the Titans will and will not do unless they undergo a change in philosophy or come face to face with a player who they feel is so different he forces them to.

Here is one thing I don’t think the Titans will do based on their recent history:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Former Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton has joined Brian Flores’ suit against the NFL claiming racism in hiring practices.

Horton joined the Titans in 2014 as defensive coordinator under Ken Whisenhunt and remained the play-caller in 2015 even as his mentor, Hall of Famer Dick LeBeau, joined the staff.

But when Mike Mularkey took over in 2016 he wanted LeBeau to call the defense and Horton asked out to take a job in Cleveland. [Unlocked]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Titans who are willing will report for phase one of the team’s offseason program on April 18.

But the die may have already been cast by then as to whether the team will deal again with the sort of soft tissue injuries that were too big of an issue in 2021.

Julio Jones is gone, and his hamstring was top of list. But at least 14 other Titans dealt with soft tissue injuries during the season.

Such injuries were up around the league and a point of emphasis and study and research.
