NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Heading into season four, Harold Landry remains a one-trick pass rusher: Speed around the corner is his thing.

So his new position coach came up with an interesting new tactic to force the development of moves beyond that.

Landry is not allowed to use the speed rush at practice.

“I took his fastball away,” Ryan Crow said. “He’s a speed-dip guy, I think everyone that watches his film throughout the league realizes he’s a speed-dip guy so I think the conversation with him was, you can’t use that in camp, you’ve got to find something else, make some new mistakes, learn some other moves, try them, see if they work and try to create that second and third pitch."

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In the low red zone, two receivers lined up on one side of the field and crossed en route to the end zone, looking to create problems for the Titans' cornerbacks.

It worked well, particularly when Caleb Farley was involved. The first-round pick struggled to sort through the rub concepts and was clearly disappointed in himself.

“Just getting your eyes in the right place, the little details and building chemistry,” he said. “Knowing what everybody is going to do. Just getting back mentally sharp and things like that.” [Unlocked]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- While the focus before Sam Ficken arrived was on the Titans’ inexperience at kicker, another big void in the Titans’ special teams has gone relatively unnoticed.

The five guys who’ve caught punts so far for Craig Aukerman don’t amount to a deep group with a lot of experience.

Adoree’ Jackson, the 18th pick in the 2017 draft, was supposed to be a quality cornerback and an electric return man. But that special teams’ element never took off and he couldn’t even dependably field balls, losing the job completely after just two seasons.

The Titans pulled the rug on Jackson’s fifth-year option in the spring and he landed with the Giants.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – As NFL scouts converged on Tempe, Ariz. or rolled Arizona State tape to watch Brandon Aiyuk or even Eno Benjamin in 2019, some took note of a player in the background who was doing some gritty work, blocking aggressively.

But there was a widespread undertone that Tommy Hudson wasn’t interested in the NFL because his plan was to be a Navy SEAL.

“Yeah, there was a little bit of a miscommunication I think on some of the player personnel people at ASU about what my ambitions were after (college) football,” Hudson said. “My dream has always been to play football for as long as God’s going to give me the ability to play it, and I guess that just was miscommunicated.”

He was not on the list of 65 tight ends Dane Brugler had in “The Beast,” his thorough pre-draft scouting preview for The Athletic.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Let’s call it pre-confidence.

Members of the Titans’ defense have been talking about the unit’s swagger, and it’s a nice concept.

Yes, there is a lot of new blood.

But when you’re coming off a season where you allowed opponents to convert over half their third downs and you posted all of 19 sacks, how much flexing should really go on at this stage?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – That Caleb Farley dropped a ball in a tipped pass drill (pictured) was hardly the most important thing about his first day on the field for training camp for the Titans.

Off NFI and with the team’s cornerbacks and defensive backs for the start of practice, the team’s first-round pick was in the mix and not operating at limited speed for what he did, a very positive sign 41 days ahead of the regular-season opener.

I wouldn’t expect Farley, recovering from two back surgeries, to be in pads with the rest of the team Tuesday, or at least not do any hitting in them. But he’ll get a morning assessment from Todd Torricelli and Frank Piraino and is on his way back.

Barring a big setback, it seems like it’d be OK to feel good about his chances for Sept. 12 against Arizona on Sept. 12.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Line them up like old-school Amtrak conductors: NFL national analysts, so many of whom punch holes in Ryan Tannehill the way the guys running trains punched holes in paper tickets.

The Titans quarterback is a success only because of Derrick Henry, they say, he can’t throw deep, he’s a product of the system, he lacks pocket awareness, he’s injury-prone.

Too many of his critics from too far a distance are unwilling to offer a revised opinion of Tennessee’s quarterback or discount his work for silly reasons.
